Keeping Mental Healthy: Writing

Keeping Mental Healthy: Writing

Right now, I am sitting in the waiting room at the psychologist. That sparks the idea for today's blog. Today I'll be hypocritically promoting something that I am personally terribly inconsistent with, but my psychologist promotes to me. Writing. (Do as I say, not as I do).

Writing can mean recording your day in a journal, writing a poem, jotting down your thoughts on a piece of paper, or anything in between. Writing in an emotionally honest way can help resolve mental dilemmas or help you be heard when there is noone around to listen. I find it particularly useful when I have ruminating thoughts that I can't control. Simply writing down my thoughts can help me to make sense of them, organise them and then forget about them.

Like a lot of coping tools, it becomes more and more difficult to use when you are distressed so it's best to practice it when you are feeling well so that you have it available to you when you are not feeling your best.

So, if there is something on your mind, give it a go and see if it is something that works for you!
