Keeping Mentally Healthy: Exercise

Keeping Mentally Healthy: Exercise

Exercise.

Exercise is hugely important for, not only your physical health, but also your mental health. There is an abundance of research on the relationship between exercise (cardio and resistance) and mental health, with evidence suggesting it leads to good short-term and long-term effects on emotional wellbeing, self-esteem, sleep, resilience, memory and reduces the risk of mental illness.

Sport is one of my biggest passions in life, so much so that I have a degree in Sport Science and I am currently studying to be a Phys Ed teacher. Over the last 4 years I spent a lot of time injured. I repeatedly broke a bone in my left foot. After the third break and the resulting surgery I couldn’t walk unassisted for 4 months and then a further 2 months in a moon boot. Towards the end of last year I was told I also need a new shoulder, but I can’t have one until I am at least 50. These injuries had a massive, negative impact on my mental health and it is something to be aware of in yourself and others.

This year I spent a lot of time rehabalitating my shoulder and foot, trying to get to a point where I can do things I enjoy once again. Finally I am at a point now where I think I have achieved baseline! I have the goal to get back into sport and I will be working hard to try and achieve that. We know that consistent activity has multiple benefits to mental and physical health.

So, if you aren’t doing anything, this is your prompt to get active and set yourself some challenges in an attempt to keep yourself mentally healthy!
